Texas Republicans are pushing a mid-decade redistricting plan that could give the GOP up to five more U.S. House seats before the 2026 elections. The Texas Senate has approved the new maps, but the plan is stalled in the House after Democrats fled the state to block a quorum.
In a shift, watchdog group Common Cause—long opposed to partisan redistricting—said it will not oppose similar efforts in blue states like California if they are meant to counter Texas’s maps. The group says any such moves must have public input, avoid racial discrimination, get voter approval, expire after 2030, and follow fairness standards.
The change comes as redistricting battles heat up nationwide, with both parties exploring ways to tilt congressional maps in their favor.
